Ella Wijt's work revolves around the medium of painting and site-specific installation. Through these two approaches, the themes she works on are personal experience, mythology and womanhood. Working as an artist is to open an intimate conversation with the presented objects, having a dialogue with line, shape and color.
The idea for her installation works for ARTJOG arose from the trauma of losing the land for the house she built due to a family dispute. This installation works presents many elements: painting, sculpture, mural, batik and poetry. The theme of the various visible forms is anything that has ever grown in a place that she cares for, which has become a part of the artist's memory. The grass pillars came from the grass that once grew around her house.
A number of candles among the dry flowers like an altar. Painting on the wall and dried flower signify what was once present in the once-existing space. Ella Wijt's poetry encourages this installation to be experienced more intimately through the medium of words. The conflict and the trauma felt by artist do not necessarily come from anger, but from silence and self-reflection.
Ella's installation for ARTJOG was produced at Rumah Kantor #Rukan, a residency space in Yogyakarta.
