Exhibition Text

This installation presents a series of marble objects shaped through improvisation. Marble is often perceived as a material that demands expertise, precision, and seriousness—all of which are true. It is a material with specific demands and temperaments.

As a first encounter with marble, Wijt's process embraced playfulness and exploration. The intention was to become acquainted with marble’s vernacularity and discover ways to relate to the material. Despite its hardness, marble requires care, patience, and tenderness. Rather than imposing form, the process involved attentive listening to the stone. Engaging with marble in this way—revealing its personality honestly—serves as an act of respect and reverence.

While far from mastery, each stage of the process—rough, soft, polished, and untouched—offered a deeper appreciation of the material’s evolving form. These elements come together to create a composition that is both intimate and complete. In this Wijt's process, marble emerges as a peculiar, steadfast companion.
