After a career of working from backrooms, garages and residencies, we celebrate Tony Albert's milestone achievement in establishing a highly functional, light-filled studio on Turbal and Yuggera Country.

Marking the occasion, Sullivan+Strumpf is thrilled to present two new series' of works from Tony Albert: Ashtralia and Wheel of Misfortune.

Through mechanisms of pop culture and iconography, Tony Albert continues his excavation of the symbols and artefacts of colonial Australia, steeping them in of an atmosphere of misplaced of nostalgia.

‘Ashtralia’ sees the casual act of ashing a cigarette set atop imagery less casual: characters of violent colonialism or symbols of colourful “Australiana”. A deliberate friction exists in these works, an illustration of the tension between our history and way we have allowed it to be retold in the present.
